Success, they say, mellows out even the fiercest of tyrants, making their dictates seem almost benevolent. Steve Jobs, the enfant terrible of yesteryears, whose unrelenting quest for perfection has driven many to Ole Tennessee or an asylum (whichever is closer) is showing signs of a kinder, gentler self, happy to share (within limits) the glory, and espousing the virtues of team work.

The timing isn’t lost on some, especially those with a more refined taste for the jugular. Apple, despite its recent tussles with the Securities & Exchange Commission, has been defying gravity, and today joined the $100 billion club, ending the day with $102.7 billion in market capitalization. Of course the elusive iPhone has mesmerized not only the fan-boys, but also the entire mobile industry.

At the D Conference today, twice he gave glimpses of the new Steve Jobs that stood out from his pontifications about iPhone, Apple TV, and the industry at large. He joked, he threw punch lines, and he was even nice to Bill Gates. He even admitted that he read Fake Steve Jobs, and some of the stuff is funny. (Shocking isn’t it? After all Apple went gunning for folks printing rumors about Apple’s products.)

In the brouhaha over iPhone, many missed this little quip from His Jobsness. “If you want to hire bright and creative people, you can’t over rule them. You can do that once or twice a year,” he told Mossberg in his chat with Walt Mossberg. (At this point, I muttered, something unprintable.) We all thought at Apple it was all Steve all the time.

We have seen the Mac faithful being hypnotized with his thespian skills, but at the D, he was the toast of a ballroom full of some bodies, proving that had he gone Hollywood, he would give George Clooney and Nicholas Cage a run for their money. He claimed Apple had two $10 billion dollar businesses – the computer and the music business – and will soon have another $10 billion business, the phone. Apple TV, which has received a lukewarm reception, was dubbed a hobby, something where many others before have failed before.

A hobby that merited an onscreen demo and press release…. Please even my inner fan boy refuses to buy that. Was it a Zen moment of spin? Or just another scene in a drama where Jobs will emerge as the savior? The digital Robin Hood so to speak? Or was it a bit of both.

At a gathering where profound utterances are as commonplace as exchange of business cards, Jobs dominated the conversation, impressing men (and women) who often grace the headlines of the same Wall Street Journal that was the host of the conference. Once again he is the center of the technology universe. And he did it his way.

It is hard to begrudge him his success. In his appearance with Bill Gates, my former boss, Josh Quittner noted, Jobs had the sweetest lines. Like this one, he uttered when looking at BillG:

“You know, I tend to think of things as Beatles or Bob Dylan songs. There’s one Beatles song that goes, ‘You and I have memories that are longer than the road that stretches out ahead.’ That’s clearly the case here.”

A moment of tenderness, or just a guy who knows that it is the last frame of the film that you remember forever. A platelet-rich gel derived from one's own blood could speed up the healing of wounds and cuts.
Researchers at the University of Cincinnati say that a topical gel derived from a patient's own blood may help prevent infection while speeding up the healing process. The finding could mean that, in the not too distant future, a concentrated "cocktail" of a person's own blood could be used to help dress wounds, particularly in patients with diabetes or other disorders that slow the healing process.

Blood's healing effects lie in its platelets--sticky, disc-shaped molecules that naturally flock to the site of a wound, binding to blood-vessel walls to stop bleeding. These platelets are thought to contain elevated levels of growth factors that, when released, initiate a cascade of events that ultimately heal the injury. In the past few years, clinicians have experimented with variations of platelet-derived gel, studying its effects on bone healing, tissue swelling, and bruising. But while scientists have reported positive results in some instances, David Hom, director of the Division of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Cincinnati, says that it's still not clear how such gels effect wound healing in healthy individuals.

In an experiment published in the Archives of Facial Plastic Surgery, Hom, then at the University of Minnesota School of Medicine, and his colleagues studied the effect of platelet-derived gel on eight healthy individuals. Hom obtained blood samples from each subject, making a gel for each individual. After applying a local anesthesia, Hom then made small incisions in the upper thighs of each subject. The wounds on one leg were treated with the individual's blood-derived gel. Hom applied a traditional antibiotic ointment to the wounds on the other leg.

Over six months, subjects returned for follow-up studies, at which the researchers took photographs and small biopsies of each wound. Hom and his colleagues found that in fact, the gel-treated wounds healed statistically faster than the controls did. And when Hom compared each subject's gel-platelet counts, he discovered that those individuals with concentrations of platelets six times greater than their normal blood concentrations healed faster. "We found that at six times or greater, it was maybe passing a threshold, signaling to the cells to heal quicker," says Hom.

Although Hom only studied healthy individuals, he says that he hopes to look at how such blood-based gels affect healing in patients with chronic wound-healing problems, such as diabetics or patients undergoing chemotherapy. "People might say, 'Why do you want to accelerate healing if it's going to heal anyway?'" says Hom. "Well, they'd be able to get out of the hospital quicker, and it would be able to reduce the risk of a wound reoccurring."

Robert Grant, acting chief of Columbia University's Division of Plastic Surgery, says that while the gel seems to speed up normal healing, more studies need to be done to investigate its effect on chronic wounds. "People with normal wound healing aren't going to be accelerated so much that the cost is worthwhile," says Grant. "The question is in patients who get radiation or multiple fractures or poor vascular disease: is the use of this beneficial?"

Meanwhile, Hom also sees a more tailor-made approach to treating wounds. "My future vision is that you might be able to say you're lacking in this type of cell at this wound-healing stage," says Hom. Japan's agriculture minister hanged himself Monday amid allegations of bid-rigging and padding government expenses. The following day, an executive allegedly linked to one of the scams leapt to his death. In 2005, 32,552 people killed themselves in Japan—one of the highest suicide rates among industrialized nations. Why are there so many suicides in Japan?

There's no single factor, but experts point to a combination of economic woes, poor mental-health resources, lenient insurance policies, lack of religious prohibition, and cultural acceptance of the practice. The economic recession that hit in the late 1990s seemed to increase the number of suicides, which jumped by 35 percent in 1998. Japan's high-interest loan system and historically strict bankruptcy laws may have contributed to this effect. But the Japanese suicide rate remains elevated, even though the economy has since recovered. Even before the recession, the rate was already a third higher than that of the United States. (Not that Japan is setting any records: Hungary, Estonia, and Latvia, among others, have more suicides per capita than Japan.)

The stigma attached to mental illness—and the psychiatrists who treat it—may also contribute to the high suicide rates. Antidepressant SSRIs didn't become widely available until 1993, and as of 2003 you could get Zoloft and Prozac only by ordering them through the mail. (Japan has been slow to introduce other drugs, too: The birth control pill, which was legalized in 1999, remains unpopular.) In 2006, the government began introducing reforms that would create suicide hot lines and make counselors available in schools and at work.

The country's legal system doesn't do much to deter suicides, either. The penal code has no provision for killing yourself, which means the government can't seize your property or send you to jail after a failed attempt. Suicide is even covered by most life-insurance policies, as long as the beneficiary waits a certain period of time—say, two or three years after signing up—before doing the deed. By contrast, some U.S. states do criminalize suicide (although they rarely enforce it), and it's almost never covered by life insurance.

Cultural factors play an important role as well. Whereas Christianity, Judaism, and Islam proscribe suicide, Japan's most popular religions—Shinto and Buddhism—are more permissive. (Critics of this theory point to China's significantly lower suicide rate as evidence that religious differences aren't to blame.) In addition, suicide is considered a legitimate solution to vexing problems. If a massive debt is going to make you a burden to your family, or a political scandal is going to taint those around you, some consider it not just permissible but responsible to protect them by offing yourself.

Suicide looms large in Japanese history and literature. Samurai warriors were famous for their willingness to disembowel themselves, a ritual called seppuku or hara-kiri. During World War II, kamikaze fighters rigged their own planes with explosives before divebombing into targets. In 1970, the ritual suicide of Japanese author and playwright Yukio Mishima drew international attention to the practice. In recent years, two trends have garnered particular attention: suicide as the result of schoolyard bullying and suicide pacts among groups of people who meet on the Internet.
